In choosing bridesmaid dresses, one of the important factors to consider is the color of the dresses. The bride may choose her favorite color for the bridesmaid dresses. She may also choose a color or colors that will suit and compliment the bridesmaids.

There are many colors of bridesmaid dresses to choose from. The chosen bridesmaid dresses' colors must be appropriate for the time, season and formality of the occasion. Pink for instance is a widely chosen color for girls. This color implies youth, innocence and femininity. Outdoor wedding during spring are ideal times to choose pink dresses. This color will also be a great choice for more mature bridesmaids. There are also varying shades of pink such as rum pink that similarly looks pretty and feminine but not very teenage-like. The pink dress may be made less like a prom dress if made without the bows and other girly decorations.

Black bridesmaid long gowns are most proper for evening ceremonies. Black short dresses may be chosen for a more casual event in combination with light colors such as white. Black is a flexible color that looks good on majority of women. Bridesmaids who want to slim down their looks also choose black for its slimming effect. Bridesmaid gowns and dresses in black may even be recycled and worn again in other formal occasions after the wedding. However, some people may not think that black is appropriate for weddings because black is usually the color related to mourning.

Red dresses are thought of as a bolder choice for bridesmaid gowns. Red dresses are best for evening ceremonies like black. To tone down its striking appearance, the dress may be made shorter and combined with other lighter colors. Red also comes in various shades. Fiery red seems to be very prominent and too sexual that it can attract the attention of the guests. This may not be favorable to the bride who should be the focus of the wedding, thus a lighter or muted shade of red should be selected. Women with brown or olive skin are suitable to wear red colored dresses. Redheads and blondes tend to look pale with red.

Dark blue shades like navy blue and royal blue can be substituted to black. Like back, these blues also look complimenting to majority of women. They look sophisticated and provide a slimming effect. Yet unlike black, dark blue shades are not associated with mourning.

Hunter green and maroon dresses are similar to dresses in navy blue color in a way that they appear preppy, vivid and clean. Both colors are colorful and dark but not too overwhelming.

Purple bridesmaid dresses can be substituted to red gowns if you want to leave out the sexual implication of red. Like red, purple tends to make a woman with fair complexion to appear paler. Purple may also look great on women with yellow skin tones. Purple, like any other colors, also come in different shades so be careful in choosing shades that will compliment your body type. Heavier bridesmaids may not look so well in purple dresses.

Pastel colored dresses are best for summer or spring daytime weddings. Orange dresses in coral or peach shades are the current trend. They look most appropriate on dark-skinned women.
